The confusion comes into play many times when reading about a "thread lift" which many years ago was performed with non-dissolvable threads. This is not the same as the new FDA-approved dissolvable threads with thread lifts which are of the same material that surgical sutures are made of. In fact, this new FDA-approved aesthetic treatment was first discovered by physicians when they had used dissolvable sutures during surgery then later had to re-enter the same area and discovered how advanced the collagen production and regeneration had occurred.
PDO threads are a non-invasive way to tighten sagging skin, smooth wrinkles and fine lines and create new collagen. The PDO threads we use at Ageless Aesthetics MediSpa are "collagen stimulators", and are safe, FDA-approved and produced in the USA.
PDO stands for polydioxanone, a natural protein woven into a thin thread similar to human hair. Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are absorbable material that dissolvable surgical sutures are made of.
Just like dissolvable surgical sutures, PDO threads are naturally absorbed into the body several months after they are placed.
PDO threads are suitable for all skin colors and types, and while they are most commonly requested by those with aging skin, PDO threads aren't reserved for correcting the signs of advanced aging. Many viral beauty influencers in their 20's talk openly about how a thread lift helped lessen the appearance of eye bags and contour and tighten their face.
The technology of a PDO thread lift in New Mexico allows a trained nurse to tighten sagging skin, improve skin laxity, and stimulate collagen and elastin production through the entire face and neck. To start the treatment, your skin is numbed, and the placement path of the threads are outlined to create the best lift for your areas of concern and unique facial tissues.
Next, tiny hairlike threads are inserted through small punctures and placed into precise locations beneath the skin, where they stimulate collagen production as they tighten and lift the surrounding dermis and deeper tissue for complete facial rejuvenation. The tiny puncture holes close and do not leave permanent visible marks or scars.
While both PDO threads, dermal fillers and Sculptra can make you look more youthful and refreshed, they are entirely different aesthetic treatments and offer different results.
Dermal fillers restore volume to treated areas of concern, provide volumizing lift from sagging skin and require regular touch-ups. Post patients return 6-8 months for dermal filler maintenance.
The long-lasting benefit threads provide is why many patients prefer a thread lift over dermal filler. There are many cases where depending on the amount of volume loss and how the laxity of the skin lays, some patients do need dermal filler to achieve the best contoured results.
PDO threads do dissolve after about 6-8 months, but the effects don't end once they have vanished. PDO threads can provide patients with great results for up to 24 months.
Because PDO threads stimulate collagen and elastin production and can contribute to skin hydration, you get long-term skin tissue rejuvenation.
You don't have to choose one or the other! PDO threads and dermal filler or Sculptra work great together. Many of our patients combine treatments and are thrilled with the results. In fact, you can achieve full facial rejuvenation by combining PDO threads with dermal filler and or Sculptra.
When used together, dermal fillers, Sculptra and PDO threads can tackle all sorts of cosmetic concerns without needing a full surgical facelift.
Threads are surgical sutures made of a unique bioabsorbable substance that dissolves over time. They are inserted beneath the skin, so as long as they are inserted by a highly skilled nurse, they cannot be seen or felt.
Note we said highly skilled and trained! There are stories out there of visible threads and infection that you might stumble upon. If there is a pucker in the thread or infection, typically it is due to in part by the patient not being compliant with the Post Care Instructions and allowing the 2 week window for full integration of the thread or they scratch the puncture hole during the healing process that introduced bacteria.

The PDO Thread Lift is a treatment which lifts and tightens sagging
skin tissue, using threads made of Polydioxanone (PDO). The threads
introduces them into the deeper layers of the skin. Once introduced, the
threads produce 3 effects in the skin.

A PDO Thread Lift is a minimally invasive procedure. After numbing and infusion of local anesthetia, the PDO threads are inserted via sharp or blunt tip needles (called cannulas) into different layers of the skin. Once inserted, the threads anchor the skin and lift it upwards. The excess threads are then cut off.
Depending on the areas treated, the procedure takes 15-30 minutes. There is minimal discomfort during the procedure, but because of the improved techniques my patients are experiencing less and less pain. We also offer “PRONOX” gas for anxiety or discomfort.
This treatment is surprisingly safe. Compared to fillers, the side effects are, in fact, much milder. Because PDO threads are inserted via needles and not surgery, and are absorbed in 6-8 months, many of the side effects associated with older thread lifting procedures, such as infection and thread breakage are also minimized.
Your skin is immediately lifted after a PDO thread lifting procedure, as the threads provide support to lift skin in its new position. You may look slightly tighter than the final result, but in about 1 week, you will begin to look much more natural.
The rejuvenative effects kick in after 1-2 months – you will notice better skin texture, firmer and smoother skin. Your doctor may concentrate more on either skin rejuvenation, or skin lifting during your procedure. Depending on the technique and which is used, the results will vary from person to person.
In about 9 months after the treatment, the threads would have dissolved, but the results will still continue for many more months. I recommend repeating the procedure 6-9 months after the first procedure, to allow for a long lasting result of up to 3 years.
