Your Guide to Botulinum Toxin Type A

What is Botox?

Botox® Cosmetic is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a prescription medicine used to temporarily relax specific muscles that cause moderate to severe lines and folds. Think of dynamic wrinkles as folds in a piece of paper. At first, they bounce back, but over time, the lines remain. By targeting the muscles responsible for these creases, botulinum toxin treatment allows the skin to smooth and soften.

In addition to Botox® Cosmetic, we offer the neuromodulators Dysport® and Xeomin®. Dysport is known for its faster onset and broader diffusion, making it suitable for treating larger areas.

Xeomin® features a “naked” form of botulinum neurotoxin that’s free from unnecessary proteins. Xeomin® is ideal for those who are sensitive to other formulas or who have developed resistance to Botox®.

Each neuromodulator we offer is FDA-approved and backed by extensive clinical trials. Your provider will help you choose the best product based on your goals, patterns of muscle movement, and treatment history.

Tailored to Your Skin and Your Life

Am I a candidate for Botox?

Most healthy adults looking to reduce or prevent dynamic wrinkles are excellent candidates for Botox treatments. This includes men and women with lines that appear during facial movement, such as forehead lines or crow’s feet, as well as those hoping to improve symmetry or soften jawline tension. Botulinum toxin injections are not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have certain medical conditions. A consultation with one of our providers will ensure the treatment is appropriate for your goals and needs.

Botox Recovery & Results

Botox Recovery

Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® require minimal aftercare. You may experience slight swelling, pinpoint redness, or bruising at the injection site, which usually fades quickly. If you’re planning for a major event, we recommend scheduling your treatment at least 2–3 weeks ahead.

To prevent the botulinum toxin formula from spreading beyond the treatment area, your provider will advise you to avoid lying flat, exercising, or applying pressure to the treated area for 4–6 hours. We also recommend skipping alcohol and blood thinners before and after your appointment to minimize bruising.

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin Injection Pre and Post Care Instructions

Botox Results

Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® start working on the treated muscles as soon as they are injected, but the visual effects will typically not be noticeable for 3-14 days. Your age, gender, metabolism, muscle density, muscle strength, and the amount of medication injected all affect the outcome of the treatment. The most important thing to remember is to have proper dosing. At Ageless Aesthetics, our cosmetic injectors are highly trained in proper dosing. It is our goal to treat our patients conservatively as we are establishing your baseline, avoiding a "frozen" look for more natural-looking results.

The results of botulinum toxin injections typically last for 3-4 months and can be touched up as necessary. With regular treatments, neuromodulator injections not only treat current lines and wrinkles but also prevent new ones from forming. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin offer the perfect, low-maintenance way to keep your skin looking its refreshed best at every age and stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Botulinum injections help the injected muscles to “relax” so that they no longer contract and cause fine lines and deep wrinkles to form. Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, & Xeomin® also block nerve impulses of the tiny facial muscles that are directly related to expression lines. After treatment, the skin overlying the treated area becomes smooth and wrinkle-free. The muscles that went untreated will contract as usual and leave normal facial expressions unaffected.

The effects of Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® usually last 3 to 4 months and gradually fade. Following several treatments of Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or Xeomin®, the results may last up to 4-6 months or longer on some patients.

Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, & Xeomin® are FDA-approved and have been used as a safe, successful treatment by tens of thousands of patients worldwide to treat medical conditions like excessive sweating, chronic migraine, and urinary incontinence. Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® have been safely used to treat hyperfunctional facial lines. Anyone who has any autoimmune diseases, is receiving immunotherapy, or has allergies to eggs should not have Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® treatments. Make sure to disclose any of these conditions to your aesthetic injector so we can recommend a different treatment approach.

Before Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin®, we recommend stopping all medications (with physician approval), vitamins, and herbal remedies that thin the blood. Do not ingest alcohol, anti-inflammatory medications, garlic, turmeric, fish oils, and omegas for one week leading up to and after your treatment. Stopping these medications for 3 -5 days prior to and after treatment will help to significantly reduce any risks of bruising that may occur at the injection sites.

After a Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or Xeomin® treatment, the patient should stay upright and refrain from massaging the treated area for four hours. No exercise for 24 hours, allowing the product to become stable in the muscles it has been injected into. For the first 24 hours, the patient should be careful not to apply pressure to the area(s) treated and be particularly careful while sleeping.

Botox is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing neurological disorders such as myasthenia gravis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We’ll also review any blood thinners or other medications you take during your consultation to ensure your treatment is safe and effective.
